Job Posting: NMR Research Associate July 12, 2009 Department of Chemistry, Alberta Ingenuity Centre for Carbohydrate Science
The Alberta Ingenuity Centre for Carbohydrate Science has a vacancy for a Research
Associate specializing in the structural determination of complex carbohydrates by high
resolution NMR and detailed studies of their complexes with enzymes and carbohydrate
binding proteins.
The successful applicant will report to the Centre Director, Dr. David Bundle and
perform multidimensional high resolution solution NMR research applied to several of
the Centre’s research projects. He/she will be expected to publish with the individual PIs
leading relevant Centre projects. Using the Centre’s new 700 MHz spectrometer and with
routine access to 500, 600 and 800 spectrometers, the incumbent will help Centre
microbiologists in structure determination of cell wall polysaccharides and
glycoconjugates derived from bio-engineered bacteria. Other projects will involve
solution conformational studies of pyranose and furanose containing glycoconjugates and
their interactions with the binding/active sites of antibodies or enzymes employing
techniques such as STD NMR and transfer NOE. An ability to multitask and interact with
several PIs on more than one project will be an essential component of this position.
The successful candidate will have at least 2 years of postdoctoral experience in the
development and application of multidimensional solution phase NMR spectroscopy
applied to the study of non-covalent biological complexes and structure determination of
biomolecules. Specifically, this should include experience in the use of NMR
spectroscopy based methods to characterize protein–ligand interactions, and experience
in the use of molecular modeling to derive solution structures from NOE or other
conformationally dependent NMR parameters. Experience in the production and
purification of recombinant proteins and molecular biology tools for the production of
mutant proteins is desirable.
The salary range is $49,801.00 to $62,257.00 per annum, commensurate with
experience. Applications should be submitted by email to Dr. David Bundle
(dave.bundle@ualberta.ca), providing a curriculum vitae, list of publications and the
names of at least two referees who are able to make informed comments on their career
and academic achievements.
