NANUC NMRView Workshop 2002
Overview Agenda Participants Acknowledgements Agenda

Dr. Ryan McKay delivers a session on NMRView for beginners
Dr. Ryan McKay delivers a session on NMRView for beginners.
The first session, "Getting to know NMRView for absolute beginners", was given by Dr. Ryan McKay. This was an especially informative session for those with little experience using NMRView.

Ryan was able to cover most of the basics of using NMRView, but unfortunately ran out of time. His informative and understandable style resulted in users requesting that he finish his introductory seminar after sessions were completed the following day.

Dr. Bruce Johnson gave a fascinating and informative session regarding the history and background of NMRView as well as an introduction to some of the various functions of NMRView. He discussed the various platforms that NMRView is able to run on as well as installation.

Following morning coffee, Bruce talked about how to use Star files, how to create them, and the advantages of integrating with the BioMagRes Data Bank. This was an extremely useful session at the workshop, and a few people with NMRView experience, who previously had not used star files, remarked that "life was just made simpler".

Following lunch, everyone had access to workstations. Bruce started the afternoon session by showing everyone how to load data. Following this, he talked about using his CBCA analysis tools to do semi-automated NMR spectral assignment. He also talked about filtering peak picked files to reduce noise using an HNCO experiment.

After coffee, Dr. Carolyn Slupsky and Robert Boyko presented a new analysis tool, based on the use of the 3-dimensional hncacb and cbcaconnh experiments, called Smart Notebook, that uses NMRView as the graphical interface. This new program was well received by participants of the workshop who described it as "intuitive", "simple", and "just how my brain works".

The morning session started with an extremely helpful session on scripting using Tcl and Tk. For those in the workshop that had never created a program or graphical enhancement, this was very educational. Some left the session wanting to create their own special Tcl world for their students.

After the morning coffee break, Pascal Mercier described his very attractive additions to NMRView. He talked about his navigator and all of the interesting things it could do such as changing 15N planes by plane number, chemical shift or residue number. He demonstrated how it could easily correlate multiple experiments in multiple windows. He also described a different method of reducing noise artifacts in peak picked files.

Following lunch, Bruce returned to demonstrate his NMRViewJ program which runs using JAVA. All agreed that the interface was better than for the C version. Although this version was slower than the C version of NMRView, the potential for cross platform compatibility was easily seen.

Finally, PJNMR was showcased by Dr. Brian Sykes as a method of looking at pulse sequences and the effect pulses have on spins. Everyone could see the potential of this as an effective teaching tool as well as an easy way to observe pulse sequences without resorting to pen and paper methods.

A discussion period followed this presentation where various people spent time working with NMRView and NMRViewJ to become more familiar. In addition, Ryan McKay completed his introductory seminar. Bruce Johnson spent time discussing some of the intricacies of NMRView to several people.
